Simple Lawn & Landscape Tips for Coastal Delaware – August 2026 

With unsettled weather this week (showers and thunderstorms likely early in the week, then warming into the upper 80s with more sun), here are a few easy, low-effort tips tailored for our coastal area and perfect for busy or retired homeowners.

1. Let the rain do the work (for now) Skip or reduce irrigation runs while we have rain in the forecast. Your system is there for dry stretches—running it during wet weather wastes water and can encourage fungal issues in our humid coastal climate. Check your controller or rain sensor after the storms pass.

2. Water deeply, early, and only when needed Once things dry out, aim for about 1–1½ inches of water per week total (including rain). Water in the early morning so the grass dries during the day. Sandy coastal soils drain quickly, so one or two longer sessions beat frequent light sprinkling. This builds deeper roots and keeps things healthier with less effort.

3. Raise the mower blade Keep grass a bit taller (3–3½ inches for most cool-season lawns common here). Taller blades shade the soil, reduce stress in the heat and humidity, and help the lawn hold moisture. Never cut more than one-third of the blade at once.

4. Quick landscape bed check After the rain, take a short walk around your beds. Pull any easy weeds while the soil is soft, and fluff or add a light layer of mulch if spots look thin. This helps hold moisture and keeps things looking tidy without heavy work.

5. Watch for soft spots or drainage issues Heavy rain can leave temporary puddles in sandy areas or low spots. Note any places that stay soggy longer than a day or two—those are good spots to check irrigation heads or drainage later when it’s drier.
